Hiring and team design

Employers building remote teams

A team of four Navigators will move fast and miss the details. A team of four Surveyors will produce excellent work late. The Compass gives a hiring manager a shared language for the balance they are actually trying to build.

Benchmark the role, not the person

Answer the 48 pairs from the role's point of view: what does this seat need when the manager is offline and the deadline is tight? The result is a benchmark reading you can compare candidates against.

Complement, don't clone

The most useful hire is often the one whose reading fills a gap. A high-North, high-East team usually benefits from a strong West or South. The profile pages describe which readings pair well.

Use it in the interview

Ask candidates about the pairs where they sit far from the benchmark. 'You'd rather ask forgiveness than permission — how has that played out with a client?' The reading tells you where to look, not what to conclude.

What it is not

It is not a pass/fail screen and it is not a prediction of performance. Treat it as a structured conversation about working style, alongside skills and references.

About WorkStyle Compass™. WorkStyle Compass is a work-style matching tool for remote and distributed teams, built and operated by Four Directions in Toronto, Canada. It describes work preferences and communication habits. It is not a psychological, personality or psychometric test, it does not diagnose or measure anything about a person, and it makes no scientific claim. Readings are meant to be used alongside skills, experience, interviews and conversation, never on their own.
